Paris:
Coming from the U.S., most folks who choose a Paris add-on will do so before the cruise. You can purchase this add-on by Viking Cruise Lines directly from Castaways Travel.

Here is a sample itinerary for a 3-night pre-extension in Paris by Viking Cruise Lines - $699/person, double occupancy (price/features subject to change)

Day 1
Transfer to the superior first class Novotel Paris Tour Eiffel (or similar), overlooking the Seine, moments away from the Eiffel Tower. The rest of the day is yours. Airport transfers are extra.

Day 2
Today, you receive a two-day prepaid Paris Pass, which covers unlimited travel on public transport and priority entry to dozens of attractions. A Viking concierge is available to help you plan your time in Paris.

Visit museums like the Pompidou, Orsay and Picasso, and historic buildings like Notre Dame, Fontainebleau and the Paris Opera. Take a Seine cruise or an open-top bus tour.

Day 3
You have a full day to further explore the “City of Light.” Stroll through Montmartre or shop along the Champs Elysées.

Day 4
Transfer from your Viking Paris hotel to the Viking Neptune in Chalon-Sur-Saone. Luxury motor coach transfers are included in the Viking Paris add-on package tour. Any airport transfers are extra.

French Riviera
Some folks will choose a French Riviera trip after the cruise as we will disembark in Southern France at Avignon, near the Mediterranean, the gateway to both the French Riviera and Cap d'Agde.

Here is a sample itinerary for a 3-night post-extension in Nice & the French Riviera via Viking Cruise Lines - $749/person, double occupancy (price subject to change)

Day 1
Transfer to the first class Radisson Nice Hotel (or similar) in Nice and spend the rest of the day exploring this coastal resort town. Airport transfers are extra.

Day 2
Tour the chic beaches of St. Tropez and the glittering enclave of Cannes, home to the annual Cannes Film Festival. Wander tree-lined boulevards and shop in exquisite boutiques before returning to Nice this evening.

Day 3
Today, enjoy the famous beaches of Nice, relax at a boulevard café and do a bit of shopping. Or, take an optional half-day excursion to Monaco—a tiny, elegant country whose capital, Monte Carlo, hosts exclusive casinos and the annual Monaco Grand Prix. Enjoy a tour, free time and the stunning coastal drive back to Nice.

Day 4
Transfer to the Nice airport for your onward flight. Any airport transfers are extra.

Cap d'Agde - August 1-8, 2010
Choose a trip to Cap d'Agde, the worlds largest Nudist City after Castaways' summer nude cruise as we will disembark in Southern France at Avignon, near the Mediterranean, about 90 minutes from Cap d'Agde by car or train (directly into Agde). Castaways' travel affiliate there can arrange both accommodations and transfers for you.

Join the group hosted by James & Champagne and visit this city of 30,000 nudists during the summer. Their dates are August 1-8, 2010, although you may stay longer if you prefer.

Castaways Travel has an English-speaking agent in Cap d'Agde who can help arrange your customized visit for any number of nights and can provide round trip transfers by shuttle from Avignon or from the train station if you travel by rail. You may rent a car, too, for the short drive to Cap d'Agde from Avignon. An excellent tollway (the A-9) connects both cities. July-August is the most poplular months for Cap d'Agde, so you book your accommodations WAY ahead of time. For instance you probably need to book for summer 2010 sometime this winter for the most choices including apartments, condos and villas. Each accommodation is individually owned and our on site agent can arrange this for you. For departure, the two closest airports are Beziers (BZR) and Montpellier (MPL). Beziers is about 20-25 minutes from Cap d'Agde and Montpellier, about an hour. Castaways' local agent can arrange airport transfers for you at the end of your visit.

Lyon, the Rhone Valley & Beaujolais Region
If you've already been lucky enough to "do Paris", another good option for a pre-cruise trip is Lyon and the beautiful Beaujolais country. You could fly or rail to Lyon and spend a few days there prior to making you way up to Chalon-sur-Saône or Beaune for the start of the river cruise.

We had the good fortune to attend an industry meeting in Lyon April of 2008 and found the area a wonderful alternative ... and what a difference compared to Paris! We found the local Lyon citizens supremely patient with and tolerant of our faulty high school French with a Texas twang (“bone jur” ya’ll in a ”Howdy neighbor” style).

If you want a taste of France outside the big city atmosphere of Paris, try Lyon, the Rhone Valley and Beaujolais wine country for a real immersion into the finer things of French life.
